Week One;

18 - 22 July

Initial Response to brief - Cinematic Device - Site Device creation

This semester our brief explores cinematic space and moving image - how this goes hand in hand with spatial design is something I initially struggled to understand, but after going over the brief with the rest of studio class I began to understand and become excited about the premise of exploring cinematic space - seeing cinematic space as a tangible thing to work with will be a interesting avenue --

After reading Giuliana Bruno's text, it became more clear and the complexities around this brief unfolded --

During our talk we were directed to research different cinematic devices, and I decided to look into ancient lenses - leading me to the Nimrud Lens -

Glass was used as an optical device for thousands of years, and is still an integral part of cinema - as it refracts and translates light.

I know I want to use glass as my main material for this brief, it makes sense, I love to use it and it has beautiful materality - visually.

I wanted to get onto making my site device for next weeks site visit, and if I was going to use glass I needed to start like ASAP:

I began by taking a mold of my phone - to cast some plaster-silica mix into, and then cut sheets of glass to lay over these casts in the kiln.

This meant the glass would melt over the shape of my phone, so when I was to take them out I could use them as some kind of optical lens.

They slumped beautifully - just reminded me how fragile glass is and we had a few breakages - still able to use for nxt week though!

Cool start to the sem! 8/10
